Seas the Weekend at the Monterey Bay Aquarium's “World Oceans Day Celebration”

05/19/2010
Celebrate the oceans and all they provide during a World Oceans Day weekend at the Monterey Bay Aquarium on Saturday and Sunday, June 5 and 6. Special activities including live music, a family craft room, sustainable seafood samplings and much more is on the agenda – all included with aquarium admission.

The third annual celebration coincides with the international observance of the oceans – the largest habitat for life on Earth. The weekend will be dedicated to honoring ocean ecosystems, as well as learning about land-to-sea connections and about the role people play in assuring the health of the world’s oceans for future generations.

Visitors will be encouraged to seek their personal connection to the oceans, learn more about the global importance of clean water, and discover how lakes, rivers and oceans are all connected.

Highlights of the “World Oceans Day Celebration” include:
• Performances by steel drum musician Derek Smith, who fills the air with his cool Caribbean sounds from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the Marine Mammal Gallery.

• Fun family performances by Peter Weiss, the singing scientist, on Saturday afternoon, on the Great Tidepool deck.

• Sustainable seafood tasting with Seafood Watch. Visitors can sample seafood that’s healthy for the oceans and for the family at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday, on the Great Tidepool deck.

• Musical group Zun Zun entertains the family at 2 and 3 p.m., on Sunday only, on the Great Tidepool deck.

• Special premier screenings of White Shark Cafe, a Sean Aronoson film about one of the most feared ocean predators, at 12:30 and 4 p.m. in the auditorium.

• A family craft room where children can decorate reusable lunch bags to take home (while supplies last) and listen to Dr. Seuss readings, including One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, from noon to 4 p.m., in the Discovery Labs.

• Informational booths featuring many ocean conservation organizations.

Another great way to celebrate “World Oceans Day” is to take part in an Aquarium Adventure aboard the Derek M. Baylis, a state-of-the-art, eco-friendly 65-foot research sailboat. For an additional fee, visitors can be part of a “Day Sail” or “Sunset Sail” adventure on Monterey Bay. During “Day Sails” visitors will work alongside aquarium naturalists to learn about the effects of pollution on the oceans and ocean wildlife.

The aquarium celebrates the oceans every day, and will offer visitors additional opportunities to connect with them too as the presenting sponsor of the BLUE Ocean Film Festival and Conservation Summit, which makes its Monterey Peninsula debut from August 25 through 29. For more information and to purchase tickets to BLUE screenings and events, visit www.blueoceanfilmfestival.org.

All exhibits and programs except BLUE, “Day Sails” and Sunset Sails” are included with aquarium admission: $29.95 adult; $27.95 senior (over 65) and student (full-time college, with I.D.); $17.95 children and the disabled; under 3 free.

World Oceans Day is sponsored by Union Bank. Weekend sustainable seafood demonstrations are sponsored by Whole Foods Market. For more information about the aquarium and to purchase tickets online visit www.montereybayaquarium.org.

The mission of the Monterey Bay Aquarium is to inspire conservation of the oceans.
